Engagement
The design makes the ring

The average American spends a full three months choosing the right ring for their sweetheart. Of course, you don't necessarily have to devote quite that much time to the subject, but this statistic does reflect that it's a pretty tricky question. We make the choice a little easier for you by telling you everything you need to know about the material, engraving, ring shape and surface design of engagement rings.

How to find the right ring for the right person or persons

Three points should be considered when choosing the right material: resistance to tarnishing, strength, color. The most durable materials are precious metal alloys, which are characterized by high fineness of the precious metal and a special strength. High fineness (in the case of gold, we also speak of carats) prevents the ring from tarnishing after some time, and the hardness of the material prevents it from showing noticeable signs of wear.

Often women prefer either colored materials such as yellow gold and red gold or white-silver colored jewelry such as white gold, silver and platinum. Find out your future wife's favorite shade based on the contents of your jewelry box. If she loves both shades equally, a bicolor look, that is, the use of two different colored materials, is also possible. In this case, for example, a narrow strip of the ring band, the inside or the edge is made of yellow or red gold and the other part is made of white gold or platinum.

If it should be a gold colored ring, then you can choose between rose gold, or red gold, and yellow gold. Rose gold and red gold consist of an alloy with copper content, which creates the reddish hue and hardness. Therefore, with lower gold and higher copper content, it is often referred to as rose gold, as the hue is more intense. Yellow gold, in turn, consists of an alloy of gold, copper and silver. Due to the silver content, the fineness of the gold here should be at least 585, so that the engagement ring does not tarnish.

750 yellow gold is even more precious, but also softer and therefore more sensitive. Yellow gold is the second most popular material for engagement rings in Germany after white gold - 29% chose this material. Regardless of the material you choose, the lifelong preparation of your jewelry is part of our service.

White gold, silver and platinum are very similar in appearance, but have different properties. Platinum is the most valuable material, it is characterized by its hardness and insensitivity. White gold is also a good choice for engagement rings and the most popular material for them in Germany. About a third of all proposal rings are made of white gold. And even 44% of women want a white gold engagement ring!

High-quality white gold alloys often contain palladium, another precious metal that is harder than gold. Silver, while relatively popular for engagement rings with a quarter of rings given away, is not necessarily recommended as it tarnishes over time. If you do decide to go for it, it is important to note that this material requires regular maintenance.

An important detail for wedding rings or the engagement ring is of course the engraving, which is part of our free service. Since we make our engravings with the latest laser technology, you draw here from infinite possibilities: For example, use your own handwriting or place your fingerprints as a jewelry element on the front edge.

You can freely choose the place for your engraving: Either intimate and personal on the inside edge or visible to all and as a design element on the outside. On the inside, most couples have monograms or your names engraved and, if applicable, the date of the wedding day, the engagement date or the anniversary.

Engraving sayings are also popular for the outside engraving: For example, for the ladies' ring "For a lifetime..." and for the men's ring "...on your hand". Also beautiful are symbols such as "To the moon and back again" or quotes such as "The essential is invisible to the eyes". A particularly unusual idea and a visual eye-catcher is the engraving of the GPS coordinates of the place of the first acquaintance or the marriage proposal.

The fingerprint on the front of the ring has a high symbolic value and visual appeal. It promises: "I am always with you". It also makes your engagement ring unique! Of course, symbols such as hearts, roses or shooting stars are also beautiful variants. Or make your personal drawing!

The ring surface is more than a matter of taste, because it should also be as insensitive to scratches as possible. An engagement ring can shine nobly and radiantly like a diamond or, in contrast to it, have a more discreet, roughened matte surface so that the stone catches the eye even more. One advantage of the matte surface is that scratches are less noticeable. Furthermore, a rhodium plating is possible, which means that the ring is covered with a protective layer of the precious metal rhodium. Rhodium plating is often used for rings made of white gold, because this creates a purer white color and makes the ring less sensitive to scratches.

Actually, a ring is a fairly simple piece of jewelry, usually made up of three components: the ring band (the finger hoop), the ring head (the front), and the diamond. We generally recommend a more delicate ring shape as an engagement ring than for wedding rings. This way, your partner can still wear the engagement ring over the wedding ring after the wedding, as a so-called pre-engagement ring. In this case, the engagement ring and wedding ring should be able to be combined well with each other in terms of shape. For example, an elaborately crafted ring with a diamond is suitable as an engagement ring, while the wedding ring should be wider but more discreetly designed.

In general, rings can have different shapes. In addition to rings that have the same silhouette all around in a minimalist manner, rings whose ring rail tapers or increases toward a diamond placed at the ring head are also popular. Likewise, playful continuous wave or zigzag shapes are a pretty option.

But when choosing the right ring shape, consider not only the design, but also the comfort and stability. The thickness of the ring rail, that is, how much it stands out from the surface of the hand, does not have to be consistent. For example, the ring may gain profile at the ring head for more stability, while resting thinly on the inside of the finger for more comfort and elegance. On the sides, the ring rail can be classically flat or - adapted to the shape of the finger - harmoniously rounded. The latter variant also increases wearing comfort.
