As early as 1888, the brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth opened their first own watch production facility at the foot of the Swiss Jura - at that time still in the annex of their parents' house. However, the success of the high-quality watches soon became apparent and the founders were able to expand.
The brand's current name has only been used since the 1930s and was finally officially registered: "Certina" - based on the Latin word "certus" for "safe". What name could be more fitting for the precise and reliable Swiss-Made wristwatches?
Anyone who chooses a watch from Certina can be sure to have something from their new companion for a long time. Because the brand has long been committed to robustness and longevity as the key values of its watches. Since the 1960s, this can also be seen in the logo, a turtle shell whose silhouette you can find on almost every Certina timepiece. At the same time, Certina set new standards with the DS automatic watch: it convinces with extraordinary shock resistance and a water resistance up to 200 meters. Today, the DS Action line includes not only absolutely robust sports watches for every adventure, but also professional diving watches with which you can dive down to a water depth of 300 meters thanks to their reliable automatic movement and Superluminova. As a partner of the Association of German Sports Divers (VDST), Certina draws inspiration for its development from the expertise of professional divers.
Certina timepieces are designed to withstand extreme conditions. To ensure this and prove it time and again, the watches have already accompanied expeditions to the highest mountains or the bottom of the ocean, supported scientists for months under water and overcame a difference in altitude of 1,000 meters during one of the most daring ski descents of all time by extreme athlete Yūichirō Miura. Certina was also active in motorsports, appearing for many years as a sponsor in Formula 1, motorcycle racing, and several GT series - a passion that is still reflected today in the DS Podium collection with its many chronographs. Certina is also involved in padel tennis and the biathlon, and a Certina DS DiaMaster has also been worn on the wrist of the famous heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali.

These are made from recycled plastic collected from the oceans and beaches by the #tide organization. An approach that is further highlighted by the partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) that has been in place since 2017. A more sustainable special edition of the DS Super PH500M diver's watch was dedicated to the animal and environmental protection organization, which strives to preserve endangered sea turtles.
