10 tips for pearl care

Pearls can certainly be described as unsociable; after all, a saltwater pearl has a whole shell to itself. Even after the pearls have left their producer shells, it can make sense to store pearls and other pieces of jewelry separately. Precious metals can leave scratches and scuffs on the pearls. A separate case is recommended. Ideally, this should be made of silk, as cotton can draw moisture away from the pearls.

The mother-of-pearl of pearls is composed of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, a protein that is the main component of the outer skin of molluscs. Excessive heat can destroy the chemical structures and make the pearls brittle. Therefore, keep your pearl jewelry away from strong sunlight and other sources of heat.

Many household products contain alkalis and acids that can seriously damage pearls. Remember: pearls are natural products!

As far as possible, do not wear your pearl jewelry too often on bare skin. Sweat can damage the pearls. Of course, the pearls will not be damaged by wearing them once. However, it is essential that you avoid wearing your pearl jewelry during strenuous activities.

After each wear, you should gently remove cosmetics and perspiration from your pearl jewelry with a soft, damp cloth. However, do not use chemical cleaners for pearl care.

The negative effects of beauty products on pearls can be reduced by only putting on your pearls after using make-up and deodorant.

The pearls should also be removed when swimming, bathing or showering. If they do get wet, leave them to dry carefully at room temperature.

The chains and bracelets to which the pearls are attached should be repaired and replaced regularly so that no damaged or edged areas can scratch the pearls. A metal chain can be replaced, but a uniquely grown pearl cannot!

Clean your pearls two to three times a year. For pearl care, use a mild detergent with lukewarm water and allow the pearls to dry gently at room temperature.

This home remedy is not just an insider tip for hair care: to maintain the shine of your pearls, you can treat them with olive oil every two to three years. Simply apply a light layer to the pearls with a soft cloth.

Real pearl, baroque pearl or cultured pearl: pearls can be grown in different ways and can be created in shells in fresh or sea water. But their sparkle is always breathtakingly beautiful. Even small measures have a big effect and careful, proper pearl care prolongs the life of these natural beauties. Whether it's olive oil or the right storage: as sensitive as pearls are, with the right care they will always shine with your smile.
